Educational Opportunities
The Center for Surgery and Public Health has amassed an inter-disciplinary team approach to studying surgical problems through the prism of health services research. With representatives from multiple surgical specialties and allied health and academic disciplines, CSPH offers surgical residents and graduate students with an interest in this type of research a variety of educational opportunities and benefits including:

NEW! Arthur Tracy Cabot Fellowship
The Brigham and
Women’s Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health has developed a
two year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Surgical Health Services Research
for physicians who wish to develop the skills necessary to become
independent researchers in the areas of:
- Reducing Racial and Socio-Economic Disparities in Surgical Care
- Reducing Complications and Deaths in Surgery
- Understanding and Measuring Success and Failure in Surgery
- Improving Value and Cost Effectiveness in Surgical Care
- Improving Surgical Education
The Training Program will be individually designed by each Fellow in consultation with a Faculty mentor.
Degrees and Study
Fellows
are encouraged to apply to the Harvard Summer Clinical Effectiveness
Program so that they attend at the beginning of their fellowship
experience. They are also encouraged to pursue a Master of Science or
Master of Public Health degree during their tenure. Fellows who do not
wish to pursue degrees are encouraged to enroll in selected courses for
credit or as an auditor. Fellows may attend seminars, colloquia, and
other regularly scheduled research activities relating to their studies.
Eligibility
Candidates
for the Fellowship must hold the MD, or an equivalent degree in a
surgical subspecialty. The program actively encourages the application
of women and members of historically underrepresented groups.
Fellowship Assistance
The
Fellowship pays an annual stipend based on the number of years of
relevant experience after completing the requisite degree (PGY status).
In addition, funding is available to provide support for tuition and
other expenses.
