About the Center

Melanoma specialists talking

The specialists at the Center for Melanoma Oncology at Dana Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center have expertise in all aspects of melanoma skin cancers, including treatment and prevention, research and clinical trials.

Our clinicians focus exclusively on melanoma treatment. We work closely together to evaluate and treat patients with confirmed or suspected melanoma.

Our treatment team is made up of health care professionals from a variety of disciplines, including dermatologists, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, pathologists, surgical and medical oncologists, plastic surgeons, and radiation oncologists.

We understand that cancer treatment can be challenging both physically and emotionally. That knowledge guides our treatment approach and informs how our specialists work with you to create a care plan that takes your individual needs into account.

Our patients, and their families, have access to a range of support services, including nutrition counseling, support groups, and integrative (or complementary) therapies such as meditation and Reiki.

Our specialists have expertise in treating many forms of melanoma, including:

  • Melanoma
  • Intraocular melanoma
  • Mucosal melanoma

Our Approach to Melanoma Treatment

We know it can be time-consuming to make multiple trips to Boston for different treatments. At the Center for Melanoma Oncology, patients are able to arrange to see oncologists, surgeons, dermatologists, and other specialists on same day.

Each week, our team of specialists reviews patient cases, and works together to decide how best to treat each one.

The Center for Melanoma Oncology has a variety of clinical trials available for patients. Our trials include cutting-edge immunotherapy, chemotherapy, vaccines, and novel targeted therapies to treat Stage III and IV melanoma.

Some studies are sponsored by external pharmaceutical companies, and others are developed in Dana-Farber's research labs.

These clinical trials allow us to provide a broad range of treatment options for high-risk melanoma patients or patients with metastatic disease in a way that best fits the needs of each individual patient.

Clinical Research

Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center offers a number of melanoma clinical trials. Our trials include studies in cutting-edge immunotherapy, chemotherapy, vaccines, and novel targeted therapies to treat Stage III and IV melanoma.

Clinical research is a vital aspect of our mission. Our research not only gives current patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials offering promising new treatments, but also aims to improve the lives of future generations of people with melanoma.

We believe clinical research has a direct effect on clinical care, and our clinicians are actively involved in research. When questions arise in the clinic, clinician-researchers can answer them through clinical trials, and take the new knowledge back to the clinic where it can benefit patients.

We aim to provide a broad range of options for high-risk melanoma patients or patients with metastatic disease, so that patients can be matched in trials that best fit their needs. Patients also have access to studies developed by specialists at other US medical centers.
