2008 BRI Research Excellence Awards
The BWH Biomedical Research Institute received a philanthropic gift intended to foster the research of promising junior investigators and trainees. This year, the BRI will be able to distribute up to ten $1000 awards to be used for travel to a scientific meeting or for research expenses.

CIMIT Accepting Applications for Three Grant Programs
Deadline: June 1, 2008
Amount: Varies per program
CIMIT is currently accepting 2009 funding applications for Career Development, Working Groups, and Clinical Fast Forward Grants. Applications must be submitted online using our web-based submission site by June 1, 2008. site by June 1, 2008.

Poster Competition at CIMIT
Deadline: July 31, 2008
Amount: Most innovative research, $1,500; potential for patient benefit, $1,000; and best student poster, $500.
CIMIT is pleased to announce that it will host a poster competition that will be judged at the CIMIT Innovation Congress 2008 on Oct. 28-29 in Boston. For more information, visit the CIMIT website.

Latest award and honor recipients: Awards and Honors

J. Michael McWilliams, MD, in the Department of Medicine at BWH, was presented the Best Published Research Paper Award by The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). The award was given to Dr. McWilliams in recognition of his paper, “Health of Previously Uninsured Adults After Acquiring Medicare Coverage,” which has made a significant contribution to generalist research. The award was announced at the SGIM Annual Scientific Meeting, held April 9 – 12.

David W. Bates, MD, MSc, in General Medicine and Primary Care at BWH, was presented the John M. Eisenberg National Award for Career Achievement in Research by The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). The award was presented at the SGIM Annual Scientific Meeting, held April 9 -12. The award is presented in recognition of a senior SGIM member ‘whose innovative research has changed the way we care for patients, the way we conduct research, or the way we educate our students.’ Dr. Bates is the Executive Director of the Brigham and Women's Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice and Medical Director of Clinical and Quality Analysis, Information Systems at Partners HealthCare. Dr. Bates’ research is focused on the use of technology to improve quality of care and medication safety. 

Popular Class of Osteoporosis Drugs Best at Preventing Fractures
BWH researchers compared the effectiveness of drugs for osteoporosis in preventing hip and arm fractures and found no difference between a popular class of osteoporosis drugs (bisphosphonates), which all have good evidence in preventing fractures.

Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD, in April was elected president of the American Surgical Association (ASA), the nation’s oldest and most prestigious surgical organization, which was founded in 1880. More>>

JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH,  chief of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and  professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, was named the recipient of the Premio Benessere Stresa International Prize for Research and Innovation Related to WellBeing.  More>>
