Recent Study Findings

No link between caffeine consumption and overall breast cancer risk. BWH researchers have dispelled a past belief that caffeine consumption may increase breast cancer risk. Their findings, published in the October 13 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, show that caffeine consumption does not appear to be linked with overall breast cancer risk. >>more

Prostate cancer mortality is higher for overweight men with high insulin secretion. BWH researchers and colleagues found that excess bodyweight and high plasma concentrations of C-peptide (a protein that reflects the amount of insulin secretion) in men who are subsequently diagnosed with prostate cancer indicate they are more likely to die from their disease. >>more

Try for Smoke-free Lungs

November 20 is the Great American Smokeout and November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Diseases caused by smoking kill more than 438,000 people in the US each year. Smoking is directly responsible for most lung cancer cases (87 percent), emphysema cases, and chronic bronchitis cases. Secondhand smoke causes nearly 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year in persons who do not smoke themselves.

People who quit smoking can reverse some of the damage that has been done to their lungs. Quitting smoking is both a mental and a physical undertaking. Mentally, you should be ready and relatively stress-free. Physically, you need to commit to exercising daily and getting plenty of sleep. >>more about smoking and tips for quitting

New Obesity Surgery: No incision required

Christine, patient

Despite trying nearly every non-fad diet on the market, Christine Baker, 36, had been struggling with her weight since her early 20s. In early September, that changed. Baker became BWH’s third patient to undergo transoral obesity surgery, a weight-loss procedure without an incision. “It is amazing,” said Baker. “The recovery time was so short and comfortable that I felt I could’ve gone back to work the next day.”

Last summer, BWH’s Dr. Christopher Thompson became the first in the nation to perform this type of procedure. An alternative to gastric bypass or lap band surgery, the surgery is part of an FDA-approved clinical trial at BWH and the Cleveland Clinic. During the procedure, Thompson guides an endoscope through the patient’s mouth and places carefully placed stitches to narrow the stomach. >>more

Weight loss surgery to meet your needs: BWH’s weight loss surgery team has performed over 1,000 weight loss operations and is supported by a professional staff of dietitians, physician assistants, and nurses who specialize in caring for weight loss surgery patients. >>more
