Specix0cinitiativesincludeLocallyourCenterforCommunityHealthandHealthEquityCCHHEfocusesonimprovingthehealthstatusofBostonresidentswithanemphasisonlocalneighborhoodswhichhavedisproportionatelypoorhealthandsocialindicators.In2010CCHHEservedmorethan6200communitymembersstudentspatientsandemployeesin21programssuchasthePassagewaydomesticviolenceinterventionprogramforpatientsandemployeesthePerinatalCaseManagementProgramfocusedonimprovingbirthoutcomesforvulnerablewomenandinfantsandtheaward-winningStudentSuccessJobsProgramthatisbuildingapipelineforraciallyandethnicallydiverseyoungpeopletobecomehealthcareprofessionals.NationallytheBrighamandWomenx19sOutreachProgrambringstogetherBWFclinicalstaffwithclinicalcolleaguesintheIndianHealthServiceIHSinNewMexicotoimprovethehealthstatusofAmericanIndianAlaskanNativesAIAN.PhysicianandnursevolunteersprovideamixofpatientcareandteachingofthelocalmedicalstaffaswellasremoteteachingandconsultativeactivitiesfromBostonviatelemedicinetechnology.GloballytheDivisionofInternationalHealthandHumanitarianProgramswithintheDepartmentofEmergencyMedicinecontinuestoadvancex0eldprogramscapacityforinternationalhealthresearchandeducationalprogramsdedicatedtointernationalhealthdevelopmentandhumanitarianassistance.MostrecentlywedemonstratedourpresenceindisasterreliefandemergencyresponsefollowingtheearthquakeinHaitiandrecenttsunamiinJapaninHaitiover150medicalpersonneltreatedmorethan5000patients.WealsorecentlybuiltinfrastructureeducatedfuturecliniciansledresearchandmobilizedcommunitiestosupportadequatecaredeliveryinlocationssuchasRwandawhereahealthteamcomprisedofBWFandMassachusettsGeneralHospitalprofessionalsservestosupportthedevelopmentofTeamHeartanorganizationthatconductsaheartsurgerymissionatKingFaisalHospital.TheDivisionofGlobalHealthEquitywithintheDepartmentofMedicinealsoworkscloselywithPartnersinHealthtoprovidecaretovulnerablecommunitiesinmorethan10countries.CHALLENGESANDOPPORTUNITIESServicetotheunderservedlocallynationallyandgloballyhasbeentheresultofindividualandgroupcommitmentorganizationalinvestmentandanetworkofessentialpartnerships.DespitethestrongpositionoccupiedbyBWFincommunityengagementeffortsatalllevelsandthemanysynergiesinhealthneedsthatexistamongthesecommunitiesthereareopportunitiestoadvancethiswork.OneopportunityistobuildonmodelsthatworkacrossdispersegeographiessuchasthoseprogramsthatoffertreatmenttoHIVpatientsgloballyandlocally.Culturalcompetenceincaredeliverypopulationhealthmanagementrelatedtopreventionandwellnessservicesandmentalhealthcareaccessareareasripewithopportunities.Asagrowingdisciplinewerecognizethataninfrastructuretopoolexpertsandbestpracticesalongwithincentivesforotherdisciplinestoengageinthisimportantmissionisnecessary.Programevaluationanddisseminationofbestandevidence-informedpracticesexpandingtrainingandleadershipincommunityhealthandidentifyingfundingtosustainpromisingprogramsarealsoessentialtoadvancingtheBWFcommunityengagementmission.x0x0x09
