Our Pain Management program at the Brigham and Women's/Mass General Health Care Center provides evaluation and management of patients with a wide range of acute, chronic and cancer-related conditions that can cause pain. Pain Management’s multidisciplinary staff, including experts in anesthesiology, neurology, orthopedics, internal medicine, pharmacy, psychiatry, psychology, nursing, physical therapy, dentistry, acupuncture and massage therapy, collaborate to provide innovative, compassionate, evidence-based assessment and treatment of pain. Their specialties include:

  • diagnosis and treatment of spine-related low-back and neck pain.
  • complex regional pain syndrome.
  • post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles).
  • other neuropathic syndromes.
  • chronic pelvic pain.
  • chronic pain in young adults.
  • comprehensive evaluation for patients with cancer-related pain.
  • headaches
  • arthritis

Advanced pain management techniques include:

  • implantation of drug delivery systems.
  • spinal cord stimulation.
  • radiofrequency ablation – treats lower back pain by generating heat in nerves along the spine.
  • radiofrequency lesioning (RFL) – destroys nerves that cause joint pain
  • sympathetic nerve blocks – injections of numbing medicine alongside the spine
  • biobehavioral therapies and complementary medicine methods, such as biofeedback, hypnosis, acupuncture, massage and mind/body techniques.
