Diversity
The Center promotes hospital-wide initiatives to recruit, nurture, develop and support a diverse faculty that represents the communities we train and serve, through the Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers (OMC) and the Office for Women’s Careers (OWC).
Programs and services are offered to enhance the professional development of underrepresented minority (URM) and women faculty and trainees, and to widen the pipeline of URM students at HMS and residents and fellows at BWH.
The Center administers the Four Directions Summer Research Program, a hallmark program designed to guide and prepare Native American college students to pursue careers in health care. Initiated at Harvard Medical School in the mid 90s, the program now boasts nearly 150 alumni who have spent a summer in a clinical or translational research environment, exposed to biomedical careers, provided with career mentorship, and creating lasting professional networks.
The Center collaborates with and supports the Office for Diversity and Community Partnership at HMS (ODCP) regarding minority faculty development and community outreach and the Office for Recruitment and Minority Affairs at HMS (ORMA) concerning outreach to and mentorship and career development for URM students. The Center for Community Health and Health Equity (CCHHE) was established to advance systems of care and community health programs to eliminate health disparities and elevate the health status of the communities we serve.
The Compact for Faculty Diversity is a partnership of regional, federal and foundation programs that focus on minority graduate education and faculty diversity.
