Barbara E. Bierer, MD
Barbara E. Bierer, M.D. is Senior Vice President for Research at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bierer, a graduate of Harvard Medical School, completed her internal medicine residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and her hematology and medical oncology training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Bierer maintained a research laboratory in the Department of Pediatric Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and was appointed Director of Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children’s Hospital in 1993. In 1997, she was named Chief of the Laboratory of Lymphocyte Biology at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. She served on the Scholars Committee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and on the Admissions Committee of the Biomedical Research Training Program for Underrepresented Minorities at NHLBI, where she received the Director’s Award in 1999. She returned to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in July 2002, as Vice President of Patient Safety and Director of the Center for Patient Safety. In 2003, Dr. Bierer moved to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital to assume her current position. In addition, in 2006, Dr. Bierer established the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and now serves as its first director.
Dr. Bierer’s laboratory research interests include mechanisms of T cell activation and of immunosuppression, interests that complement her clinical commitment to hematology. In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr. Bierer was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP), serving as its President from 2003-2007 and was on the Board of Directors of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). She was a member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board and, later, the Board of Directors of ViaCell, Inc. She is on the editorial boards of a number of journals including Current Protocols of Immunology, Journal of Immunology, and Blood. She is currently a member of the AAMC-AAU Advisory Committee on Financial Conflicts of Interest in Clinical Research, on the National Academies of Sciences Committee on Science, Technology and the Law, and on the Secretary’s Advisory Committee for Human Research Protections for which she serves as chair.

Andy Whittemore, MD
Dr. Whittemore is Chief Medical Officer for BWH, a position he has held since 1999, having served previously as Chairman of both Medical Staff Executive and Quality Assurance/Risk Management Committees, as well as Director of the multidisciplinary BWH Vascular Center, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Whittemore is Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and in 2006 was appointed Co-Director for the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity.
A Boston native, Dr. Whittemore received his MD from Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons, and completed his general surgical training at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and a Vascular Fellowship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. Following service with the US Navy as Chief of Vascular Surgery he joined the faculty at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1979.

Audrey Haas, MBA
Audrey Haas joined BWH in 2006 concurrent with the establishment of the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. As Executive Director she is responsible for the Center’s strategic direction and organizational evolution. Audrey leads a team that orchestrates the design and delivery of professional development, career advancement, mentorship and leadership initiatives to support faculty and trainees, and collaborates on projects related to faculty recruitment and advancement with special emphasis on diversity. Audrey has extensive experience in management education, training and development, and executive learning, having served in faculty and leadership positions at Antioch New England Graduate School and Boston University.
Prior to joining BWH Audrey directed the Executive MBA Program at Boston University where she had the opportunity to work with several BWH faculty members. Audrey earned her MBA from Boston University with a concentration in Public and Nonprofit Management.

Elena Muench
Elena Muench is the Program Manager for the Center for Faculty Development & Diversity. In this role, she is involved with the day-to-day operations of the department. As Program Manager, she plans seminars, speakers and networking opportunities for faculty, trainees and students at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Additionally, she provides support to the Center and its affiliated Offices' programs, special events and new initiatives.

Lisa Eichel
Lisa is the administrative coordinator for the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. She provides operational support to the Center and its affiliated offices. Prior to joining BWH, she was a development assistant for ABC Television Network in Burbank, CA. She received a B.S. from Boston University.

Mary Clark, PhD
Dr. Clark serves as a consultant on all aspects of academic appointments to departments and faculty in several hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School. She holds sessions at BWH twice a month, where she meets individually with faculty to discuss their academic career.
Dr. Clark received her B.Sc. in chemistry from Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, and her Ph.D. in endocrine chemistry from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School of London University. She came as a postdoctoral fellow to the Endocrine Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and subsequently joined the Office for Faculty Affairs in 1979. Dr. Clark was Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at Harvard Medical School from 1990 to 2004.

Caroline Rotondi
Caroline Rotondi, the Administrative Director of the Office for Research Careers (ORC), has a broad background in the healthcare industry, and in the academic setting in particular. Caroline oversees the development of the strategic plan for the ORC, in concert with the strategic visions for the CFDD. Caroline is leading the Postdoctoral Advisory Committee's development of guidelines and policies to address the needs of postdoctoral fellows, and working to increase hospital-wide awareness, understanding and support for the postdoctoral fellow population. Caroline is responsible for assessing the training and development needs for postdoctoral fellows, and implementing programs, seminars and workshops to improve postdoctoral fellowship career development throughout continuum of training and beyond. She has developed outreach efforts to new postdocs at weekly orientations; a vibrant ORC website and weekly e-Newsletter; a newly established a Peer Mentorship program, and serves as an advocate for the postdoc community.
Caroline has worked at both Boston University Medical Center and BWH, where she managed the operations, recruitment and accreditation of the surgical residency and fellowship programs, as well as providing oversight to the undergraduate medical education programs in surgery. Her experience includes assessment of training and career development needs, program management, and academic administration. Caroline is a graduate of Boston College.

Christian Arbaelez, MD, MPH
Christian Arbelaez is currently the Associate Director of the Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers at the Brigham and Women's Hospital where he focuses on the recruitment, development, and retention of under-represented minority students, residents, and fellows at the BWH. He is also the Assistant Residency Director of the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Arbelaez led a hospital-wide development, adoption, and implementation of guidelines for the care of the critically-ill mechanically vented patient, participated in the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Efforts with the American Red Cross, and completed his first physician leadership book, “The Emergency Medicine Chief Resident Survival Guide.” As the co-investigator of an RO1 NIH funded study, he implemented a large scale randomized clinical trial evaluating rapid HIV testing in the Emergency Department. Recently, Dr. Arbelaez has been awarded the Dennis Thomson Leadership Award at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and within the Emergency Department has been honored with the Best Teacher Award and the James Adams Leadership Award. Before coming to the BWH he completed his medical degree at University of Texas, Galveston in 2000 and his post-graduate training at the Brown Medical School Residency Program in Emergency Medicine. He earned his Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health as a Commonwealth Fund Minority Health Policy Fellow in 2005.

Nora Y. Osman, MD
Dr. Osman is the Associate Director of the Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers. In addition she is the Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Assistant Clerkship Director for Internal Medine at BWH. Dr. Osman completed her medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco before starting her medical residency at BWH. She practices general internal medicine at a busy hospital-based faculty practice. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Osman is an active member of the core teaching faculty at the medical school and in the residency. She has been nominated for multiple teaching awards by Harvard and Tufts medical students.

Carol Nadelson, MD
Dr. Nadelson has been Director of the Office for Women’s Careers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital since the office was established in 1998. A Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Nadelson is internationally recognized as an advocate for the career advancement of women faculty. In 1984, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) elected Dr. Carol Nadelson as its first woman president. She was Editor in Chief of American Psychiatric Press, Inc., from 1986 to 2001.
Among her many awards are the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Psychiatrists; the APA's Seymour Vestermark Award for psychiatric education; the Elizabeth Blackwell Award from the American Medical Women's Association for her contributions to women in medicine; the AAMC Women in Medicine Leadership Development Award and the Alexandra Symond’s award from APA for contributions to women’s mental health.
During her academic career, Dr Nadelson has been a frequent presenter at academic and clinical conferences throughout the world. She has written over 230 scientific publications and chapters, and co-edited over 40 books, and 18 tapes. She has presented over 1,000 talks nationally and internationally on topics including women’s health and mental heath, medical education, ethics, and women’s leadership and career development. She co-edited a landmark series of books, The Woman Patient, the first on this topic which was instrumental in starting the field of women’s mental health.

Deborah Fredberg, MBA
As Program Manager of the Office for Women's Careers, Deborah Fredberg manages the office's day to day operations and plans seminars, speakers and networking opportunities for faculty at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She is a former Assistant Director of Admissions at Harvard Business School, and has advised business school applicants with MBA Strategies for a number of years, providing one-on-one consulting services. Her undergraduate degree and MBA are from the School of Arts and Sciences, and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Her professional experience also includes consulting with Booz, Allen & Hamilton as well as brand management with The Gillette Company.

Sandra Gould, MA, MSM
Sandra Gould is senior staff, formerly Associate Director of the Office for Women’s Careers (OWC). She has been with Partners since 1997, and OWC since April 1998, a month after its inception. In her present capacity, Sandra creates two booklets of accomplishments each year, one for OWC, one for the Office for Multicultural Faculty Career (OMC). She maintains data on women faculty and URM data and residency Match, and works with hospital administration, Harvard Medical School and all CFDD offices to efficiently manage data on faculty and fellows. Sandra has completed Masters degrees in Speech Pathology, and Business. She has taught at graduate level, owned her own business (twice, both successfully), been a life-choice coach and mentor, co-founded a church, and been executive director of a Boston public/private non profit corporation.

Vivian Cooley-Collier
