- A recent article in The New York Times indicated that Atul Gawande's New Yorker article entitled, “The Cost Conundrum" has reset the health reform agenda and has become required reading in the White House. Policy experts are calling it "the most important health policy article in memory."
- The Safe Surgery Saves Lives checklist was launched in Amman, Jordan on June 22-23. Lizzie Edmondson and Luke Funk, MD, MPH accompanied Atul Gawande, MD, MPH to Jordan for the official launch. Representatives from 20 middle eastern countries committed to introducing the checklist, with two going nationwide. Also, France has introduced its version for nationwide implementation.

- Selwyn Rogers, Jr., MD, MPH, and Robert Riviello, MD, MPH, were authors on the paper entitled, “Bridging the gap between public health and surgery: access to surgical care in low- and middle-income countries” in Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons.
- Angela Bader, MD, MPH, was a co-author on the article, “Preoperative electrocardiograms: patient factors predictive of abnormalities” in Anesthesiology.
- Louis Nguyen, MD, MBA, MPH, was a co-author on the paper “Inferior outcomes of autogenous infrainguinal bypass in Hispanics: an analysis of ethnicity, graft function, and limb salvage”, featured in the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
- Jim Hu, MD, MPH, was a co-author on the paper “Drug treatment of urological symptoms: estimating the magnitude of unmet need in a community-based sample”, featured in the British Journal of Urology International.
- Dennis Orgill, MD, PhD, was a co-author on the paper entitled, “The skin allograft revisited: a potentially permanent wound coverage option in the critically ill patient”, featured in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
- Our Department of Surgery colleagues Chandrajit Raut, MD, MSc and Christine Mitchell were co-authors along with Stanley Ashley, MD, Dennis Orgill, MD, PhD, and Michael Zinner, MD, on the paper “Gauging surgeons' understanding and perceptions of an academic incentive plan”, included in Archives of Surgery.

The next Center for Surgery and Public Health Clinical Research Roundtable will be held on Monday, July 20, from 5:00-6:00 PM in Conference Room B, at One Brigham Circle, 4th floor. Robert Riviello, MD, MPH, will give a talk entitled, "An assessment of surgical capacity in Partners in Health-supported District Hospitals in Rwanda".
Immediately following Dr. Riviello's presentation, please join us in welcoming the new research fellows and staff to the Center. Refreshments will be served.
