The Department provides a wide range of clinical anesthesia services in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including all operating rooms, many out-of-OR locations, Labor & Delivery, the Weiner Center for Preoperative Evaluation, the Surgical Intensive Care Units (SICU), the cardiac SICU, the Pain Management Center, and Faulkner Hospital. Preoperative medical/surgical evaluations, regional and general anesthetics, labor epidurals, critical care patient management, postoperative pain management, chronic pain management, and emergency services are provided by the Department to over 45,000 BWH patients each year. We currently serve more than 50 ORs and 12 out-of-OR locations, including the Foxboro Ambulatory Surgery Center.
Many of our clinical anesthesiologists, as well as a large contingent of basic scientists address issues at the forefront of research areas such as neural blockade in anesthesia, pain management, anesthetic and analgesic interactions during surgery and in the immediate postoperative period, and preemptive analgesia. Active and well-funded research programs in the department also focus on ischemia, reperfusion, coagulation, inflammation, myocardial muscle degeneration, periodontal disease and nerve regeneration, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injury, tissue engineering, stem cell biology, and tissue regeneration.
The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine includes our award-winning Pain Management Center and numerous other clinical programs and services. Find out more by browsing these pages; you may also enjoy our quarterly newsletter, the Anesthesia Record.
