Thyroid Section

Faculty and Staff

The Thyroid Section is a comprehensive clinical care center focused on patient care and research.

The Thyroid Section at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) has extensive experience diagnosing and treating conditions of the thyroid including thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidism, thyroid disease in pregnancy and general disorders of the thyroid.

Thyroid Nodules

Patients with thyroid nodules are typically seen in our multidisciplinary outpatient clinic involving the Thyroid, Ultrasound and Cytopathology Sections. Patients are seen in the ultrasound department where a thyroid ultrasound is performed and patients are seen by an endocrinologist. A fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid nodule(s), if appropriate, is performed on the same visit.

Although most thyroid nodules are benign, some require treatment including surgery or radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

Thyroid Cancer

Our team has extensive experience diagnosing and treating thyroid cancer. We work with a multidisciplinary team which includes specialists in endocrine surgery, radiology, pathology and anesthesiology. We offer radioactive iodine ablation when indicated in our thyroid test center. Most patients with thyroid cancer are followed in our thyroid section. However, some with more advanced thyroid cancer may be referred to our colleagues at Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

Hyperthyroidism

We diagnose and treat all forms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Although some forms of hyperthyroidism only require observation, others require treatment with medications, and/or radioactive iodine which is available in our thyroid test center.

Thyroid Disease in Pregnancy

Our thyroid section has expertise in treating thyroid disease in pregnancy. Both hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can occur in pregnancy and treatment may be required for a healthy pregnancy.

General Disorders of the Thyroid

We also diagnose and treat other disorders of the thyroid such as hypothyroidism, adverse effects from medications such as chemotherapy and thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid).
