Richard S. Johannes, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Johannes joined GI Division in June 2003.  He trained at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and was a member of both the Gastroenterology Division and the Department of Biomedical Engineering.  While there, he received both the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Daniel Baker Jr. Award for providing outstanding clinical care.  His research interests are in medical informatics and health services research.  Dr. Johannes has a longstanding interest in structured note generation and controlled medical terminology.  He contributed to the development of the Minimal Standard Terminology for endoscopy that has now been adopted by the National Library of Medicine, Universal Medical Language System.  He has developed several tools including the endoscopy note generation program in use at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition, Dr. Johannes has worked with large retrospective databases to produce risk adjustment methodologies pertinent to comparison of hospital performance metrics.
