Dr. Pedrosa's academic interests and specialized expertise within Gastroenterology include Barrett's esophagus; the role of unsedated endoscopy in the screening; the impact on the patient as measured by health-related quality of life instruments; Barrett's progression from low-grade dysplasia to cancer; and newer diagnostic and therapeutic interventions such as spectroscopy, photodynamic therapy, high-frequency ultrasound, magnification endoscopy, and optic coherence tomography. Other areas of investigation include health services research in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is also the Chief of Endoscopy at the VA Boston Healthcare system which provides specialized and interventional endoscopy for the New England region and outside. The combined VA BHCS Endoscopy Units have an annualized rate of over 4,000 procedures including 700 inpatient procedures at the West Roxbury Campus.
