Members of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital are dedicated to the mission of providing compassionate, high-quality clinical care for patients with pulmonary disease and their families; to educate and train the next generation of academic leaders in pulmonary and critical care medicine; to generating new knowledge through research that will improve our understanding of the mechanisms of, and ability to treat common pulmonary diseases, including acute lung injury, interstitial lung disease, airways diseases (COPD, asthma bronchiolitis obliterans after transplantation) and orphan diseases such as Churg-Strauss Syndrome and Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM).

History of Growth and Innovation

1973

Roland H. Ingram, Jr., M.D. appointed as the first division chief and subsequently named as the first distinguished Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. 

1989

Establishment of a Longwood Medical Area Adult Asthma Center which expanded into the Partners Asthma Center in 1997. 

1989

Jeffrey M. Drazen, M.D. is appointed Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and then named the distinguished Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. 

1990

Establishment of the Lung Transplant Program
1990 - First single lung in New England
1990 - First double lung in New England
2002 - First Living related Lung transplant in New England
2006 - First DCD Lung Transplant in New England

1993

Members of the PCCM division are chosen as a member of the Asthma Clinican Research Network, the first clinical research Network created and funded by the NIH.

1995

Members of the PCCM division are awarded an Asthma Score grant from the NIH, the first Score grant awarded.

1999

The Center for Chest Diseases is established in response to the growing need for an ambulatory practice for respiratory related illnesses.

2003

First to conduct Clinical trials of a minimally invasive approach to bronchoscopic lung reduction surgery for emphysema treatment.

2004

Clinical expansion begins at Youville Hospital to meet the needs of patients from BWH and other area institutions for long-term acute care and ventilator weaning.

2001

Steven Shapiro, M.D. is appointed Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and then named the distinguished Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. 

2005

Pulmonary physicians at BWH and Children’s Hospital Boston create a program to service the needs for adult patients living with Cystic Fibrosis.

2007

Augustine M. K. Choi, M.D. is appointed Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and then named the distinguished Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. 

2008

Clinical areas, such as Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), Churg Strauss Syndrome, and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) are added to the Division extensive list of respitory services.

2008

TB clinic opens at the Center for Chest Diseases.
