Alishya Mayfield earned her BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1997, and her MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2010. After graduating from college she spent five years working for a Member of Congress in Washington, D.C. She also volunteered at a shelter for abused women and children, in the Oncology ward at Children’s National Medical Center, and in a clinic in Mozambique. During medical school she spent a summer in Ghana working on the development of HIV/AIDS outreach initiatives for Liberian refugees. She then spent two years volunteering for Partners In Health in Rwanda. While there she worked in remote health clinics caring for patients and improving clinical services. She also worked on a study examining the clinical outcomes of 1,000 Rwandan patients with HIV/AIDS, and a WHO-sponsored study looking at the impact of PEPFAR and the Global Fund on healthcare systems in Rwanda. As a Global Health Equity resident, she plans to pursue her MPH and hopes to continue improving access to healthcare and building local capacity in resource-poor settings.
