Patrick Newman earned his BS from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2005, and his MD from the University of California, San Francisco in 2010. During medical school he spent a month with the Comprehensive Rural Health Project in rural Jamkhed, India. As a Doris Duke international research fellow, he spent a year in Uganda where he designed and conducted a preliminary assessment of a policy aiming to control placental malaria infection in HIV- positive pregnant women. The resulting publication led to a grant supporting future research on this topic. While in Uganda he also co-founded a non-profit grassroots community health organization which trains young women to combat basic infectious diseases and malnutrition in their villages. As a Global Health Equity resident he plans to pursue an MPH and hopes to expand his research skills in order to disseminate successful community interventions and perform programmatic self-assessment.
