The Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery provides comprehensive diagnosis, management and follow-up of surgical disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and allied disorders.

Services

This web site contains a list of common general and gastrointestinal surgical diagnoses. Although we have included many diagnoses and have attempted to cross reference them with other medical terms, if you do have a general or gastrointestinal surgical problem that does not appear on the list, please do not hesitate to call 617-732-5122 for additional information.

  • Esophageal Disease
  • Colon and Rectal
  • Endocrine
  • Hepatobiliary/Gallbladder
  • Hernias
  • Pancreas
  • Obesity (Weight Loss Surgery)

Services include diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, surgical and non-surgical treatment of gallstones and other biliary, pancreatic and liver disorders, management of inflammatory bowel disease including ileoanal anastomosis, treatment of benign and malignant surgical diseases of the endocrine system, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, anus and rectum, and hernias. Therapeutic endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures are also performed.

Cutting-Edge Surgical Programs

The Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery has a rich heritage in the development of cutting-edge surgical services. Recent developments have been in the areas of colorectal surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery, minimally invasive endocrine surgery, and an expanded metabolic support service. We also work in conjunction with the Division Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension and their Program for Weight Management.  We provide surgical procedures for obesity, including gastric bypass surgery and Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding (LAP-BAND).
[More information on procedures.]

Research

Division faculty are involved in a wide range of molecular and cellular studies to understand the normal and disease stages of the gastrointestinal tract and to develop innovative diagnostic tests and treatment for these disorders. Division faculty are also identifying opportunities to apply minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to provide cost-effective care.

Training

As a Harvard Medical School affiliated teaching hospital, our mission is to train the future leaders of academic surgery. We are committed to supporting and teaching each resident so they are ready to matriculate to the next level of training and, at the completion of their training, to successfully complete the board examinations and begin practice or fellowship.
