Patient Care Assistant Training
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Patient Care Assistant Program is an intensive training program that prepares entry-level employees to work as Patient Care Assistants at the hospital. The program is offered as part of collaboration with Bunker Hill Community College. After successful completion of AHE 108 – Certified Nurse Aide Training course – 7credits, the student is awarded a Nurse Assistant Training Certificate and is eligible to take the Massachusetts licensing examination for Certified Nursing Assistants. The deadline for submitting applications is November 29, 2008.
PROGRAM DATES AND LOCATION
- Classes will start Thursday, February 12, 2009 and continue until May 2009.
- Class will be held on Thursdays, from 8:00 AM to 4:00PM at either Brigham and Women’s Hospital or Bunker Hill Community College.

CLINICAL
- There will be a 21-hour clinical practicum. The practicum will be held over two Thursdays and one Saturday. These dates will be communicated after the start of class.
ELIGIBILITY
The Patient Care Assistant Training program is open to employees who meet program eligibility and minimum requirements at Bunker Hill Community College. Employees will be selected for this program without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, religion, gender, age, handicap, veteran status or sexual orientation.
- Must commit to at least 2 years of continuous employment after graduation in a regularly scheduled position at BWH in order for the loan to be forgiven. If employee terminates employment at BWH prior to one year after graduation, the full amount of the loan will be due and payable. If employee terminates employment at BWH after one year but prior to two years after graduation, 50% of the loan will be due and payable; and
- Must complete a Promissory Note for the amount loaned.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Employed for a minimum of six months
- In good performance standing (no disciplinary actions within the previous six months period)
- Complete a BWH Workforce Initiative application including:
- A personal statement of at least 200 words (typed or neatly printed): What are your duties and responsibilities? Describe your perceived strengths and areas for improvement. Describe your career goals and educational objectives.
- One letter of recommendation from your immediate supervisor
- Has a strong desire to work as a Patient Care Assistant after graduation
- Must be able to attend the program every Thursday for 15-weeks beginning on Thursday, September 18, 2008
- Final applicants may be required to participate in an interview process
BUNKER HILL REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma/GED
- BHCC Assessment test – Accuplacer Computerized Placement Test (CPT). The Test is administered at Bunker Hill Community College. Additional information will be provided to applicants.
- Personal Health Insurance – All students must have personal health insurance and provide policy name and number.
- Complete CORI form
- Completed Health Clearance Form (This form will be provided at start of program.)
Upon acceptance to the program, you will need to present your completed health clearance form to BHCC. Failure to do so will jeopardize your continuance in the program.
Employees must be in good performance standing to continue in the program.
Employees participating in this program should discuss this opportunity with your manager and obtain their support in arranging a flexible scheduling option. Financial resources will be available to assist with employee release time and backfill, as appropriate.
ASSESSMENTS
This program requires employees to participate in some form of testing or assessment as a part of the screening process at Bunker Hill Community College. BHCC requires students to take the Computerized Placement Test (CPT) examination. CPT examinations are held at BHCC main campus in Charlestown, MA.
