Finding an Educational Program and School
Boston has dozens of schools and hundreds of programs. As health care is the largest employer in the area (and is continuing to grow), many schools offer courses, certificates or degrees in healthcare related topics. By this point in your exploration, you should have a clear idea of what field you want to go into. Now it’s just a matter of finding an educational program to propel you to the next step.
Further education does not always mean obtaining a 4-year degree at a traditional college. Other levels of education include:
Professional Development Classes/Continuing Education:
These classes are usually given individually and are designed to help you do your job better or give you a single additional skill. Some examples of these would be taking a few classes in Excel; participating in a medical terminology class; or taking a course that would certify you in use of a new device or procedure.
Certificate Programs:
These programs are usually 1-3 semesters in length and represent the starting point on the education ladder. Some careers mandate that you combine the certificate gained in school with a professional state certification (like the CNA/PCA). This kind of program is an ideal choice for people who want to begin a new career without making the financial or time commitment of a lengthy education.
Associate’s Degree:
The basic college degree, an Associate’s is the ideal step to seriously advance your career. These degrees can usually be gained in as little as 1 year or as long as 3 years depending on the program.
Bachelor’s Degree:
The most marketable of college degrees, the Bachelor’s degree is still widely obtainable by working adults. Some Bachelor’s programs can be completed in as little as 18-24 months, but most require a more intensive schedule. Other programs can go for as long as 4 or 5 years on a part-time basis. While this still remains the best choice for access to jobs and new career possibilities, it is also the most time-intensive.
Transferring Your Credit:
Many degree programs will consider credit from previous classes, degrees or even work experience. Most schools though have a 5 year limit on science classes. Make sure to check with the institution to see what type of credit you can get towards your degree.
