There are over 1.5 million head injuries per year in the United States. Occupational therapists provide skilled evaluation, treatment, and community re-entry intervention for patients who have sustained a head injury. Occupational Therapists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital are currently working on an initiative to identify and provide a broader continuum of care for patients who have mild brain injuries or concussions. The functional impairments from a mild brain injury can result in significant cognitive and psychological problems that prevent people from returning to their previous roles and occupations.
Occupational Therapists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have been educating other health care professionals throughout the facility about the importance of identifying those patients at risk for mild brain injury. A cognitive and functional evaluation by an occupational therapist helps to direct this patient’s care for out-patient services and to educate the patient and family on ways to modify their daily routine during their recovery.
