Initiating a referral
A physician’s order or Prescription is required. We provide consultation, evaluation, management and treatment for swallowing, speech, language and cognitive-linguistic disorders. Evaluation of dysphagia may include an instrumental assessment such as a Video swallow Study, (also known as a Modified Barium Swallow study), or a FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallow).
Video swallow Studies are completed in Diagnostic Radiology with an attending radiologist or with a radiology resident under the supervision of an attending radiologist. Check-in is located at Outpatient X-ray/Screening Mammography on level L-1, diagonally across from the Amory elevators (75 Francis Street). This evaluation is available by appointment only. Morning appointments are available on Mondays and Wednesdays with afternoon appointments scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallow) examinations are completed by clinicians from the Speech and Swallow Service in exam rooms in the Department of Otolaryngology in the Ambulatory Services Building II (ASB 2), on the second floor (45 Francis Street). FEES examinations are available by appointment only.
Consultation, evaluation and treatment for speech, language and cognitive-linguistic disorders are available by appointment only, Tuesday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. These services are also provided in the Department of Otolaryngology in the Ambulatory Services Building II (ASB 2), on the second floor (45 Francis Street).
Making an appointment:
To schedule an appointment, please call our main number: 617-525-7225.
Insurance:
We are providers for most insurance plans. If you have a managed care plan that requires an insurance referral for speech therapy, you must obtain the referral prior to your first appointment. If you are unsure of your insurance benefit for speech and/or swallow services, we recommend you call your insurance plan for specific details. It is your responsibility to know your insurance plan’s benefits.
Checking In for Your Appointment:
When arriving for your appointment please check in with the secretary. We make every attempt to see patients on time. This may be altered, however, if we have unforeseen emergency situations. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late please make sure to identify yourself to the secretary. Depending upon how late you are and the flow of the clinic during that particular time, we may need to reschedule your appointment.
Interpreter Services:
If you require the need of an interpreter please identify this need to the secretary scheduling your appointment. We will then arrange for an interpreter to assist you during your appointment. There are situations when the interpreters’ time is limited due to assisting other patients with emergency situations throughout the hospital. It would be extremely helpful for both you and your therapist if you are able to bring an adult family member who can assist you by interpreting.
