Dr. Friedman, who was recruited to the Gastroenterology Division following completion of her GI Fellowship at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, joined the Division in September 1999. Her clinical and research interests are in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As a fellow and an attending, she quantitated the prevalence and incidence of dysplasia and carcinoma in a large population of chronic Crohn’s colitis patients. In addition, she studied the risk of developing dysplasia and cancer in patients with chronic colitis who had had polypectomies rather than colon resections for adenomatous polyps. Her other main interests are pregnancy and women's health in IBD. Currently, she is participating in several IBD treatment protocols, including studying pregnancy in IBD and investigating patient adherence to surveillance colonoscopies in IBD.
