A mural of birds carrying medicinal herbs decorates the previously bare walls of the hallway between BWH and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). Dubbed the Bridge of Hope, the existing mural is the brainchild of Estrellita Karsh and is inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem. Karsh enlisted artist Nan Freeman, director of the Post Baccalaureate Program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, to create the mural. Freeman and a team of painters took on the challenge and completed the mural in October 2005.
Art projects such as these make a difference in patients' experiences as is evident in a young DFCI patient named Emily Eaton. Emily took a particular liking to the Scarlet Ibis during her regular appointments. She would be incredibly enthusiastic to visit the hospital in order to "visit her bird". Instead of leaving tired, she left energized. Instead of leaving overwhelmed, she left delighted. The space creates a respite for patients and their families while traveling between the two institutions for treatment.
Donors have the opportunity to adopt and sponsor birds on the mural. All proceeds benefit patients and staff of BWH.
