Anesthesiology resident Trevor Szymanski, MD, was recognized with the 2012 Bizzari-Schmid Compassionate Care Award.
Ronald Hurley, MD, executive vice chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, presented Szymanski with the award on Jan. 9. The award honors the memory of the late Marina Bizzarri-Schmid, MD, a BWH anesthesiologist known for kindness, compassion and warmth in her delivery of patient care, who passed away in 2007. The annual award was established in 2009 and is open to any clinical anesthesia provider, including faculty, fellows, residents, CRNAs and SRNAs.
"Marina was the finest of caregivers, combining grace with meticulous ability," said Hurley. "She was adored by all."
Szymanski's nominator detailed the BWH resident's stellar medical knowledge, leadership abilities, compassion and dedication to patients. "I am amazed by the way in which Trevor can instantly connect with a patient, quickly earning the trust unique to the patient-physician relationship of an anesthesiologist," his nominator wrote. "In observing some of these interactions, it's almost palpable to see the patient immediately become reassured that Trevor will be their guardian during the perioperative period. I have tried to emulate his bedside manner and the compassion that he demonstrates with each patient."
