Albert L. Sheffer, MD, FAAAI, and K. Frank Austen, MD, FAAAI, physicians in the Division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy at BWH, received the Mentorship Award at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology's (AAAAI) annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The award recognizes individuals who, by serving as mentors, make a difference in the careers or trainees and colleagues and, by extension, enrich AAAAI's fields of specialty.
The award, which is the first of its kind to be given by the AAAAI, recognizes Sheffer and Austen's successful, NIH-funded training program in Allergy and Immunology at the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital. In 1968, Sheffer and Austen initiated this training program shortly after Austen was appointed Physician-in-Chief at the hospital. The successful training program has provided training for six presidents of the AAAAI, three chairs of the in-house allergy program at the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and numerous leaders in the field of medicine throughout the United States and internationally. The three chairs of the in-house allergy program at the NIAID trained at BWH.
The AAAAI is a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, research and practice of allergy, asthma and immunology for optimum patient care.
The NIAID conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat and prevent infectious, immunologic and allergic diseases.
