Laser Therapy
What is laser?
It may be determined that laser will be used to treat the abnormal cells on your cervix and/or vagina. Laser is a high-energy light beam that is used to destroy abnormal cells on your cervix or vagina.
Instructions prior to laser treatment
It is important that you do not have laser treatment during your menses or immediately prior to menses. If you are pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant, you should not have the laser treatment. Call the Pap Smear Evaluation Center concerning this.
What to expect during laser treatment
The procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes and is done in an operating room as a day surgery procedure. This is similar to the colposcopy exam.
You may expect some cramping (similar to menstrual cramps) following the surgery.
Instructions following laser treatment
Most women experience a vaginal discharge, which may last 2-3 weeks while the cervix is healing. Call your nurse or doctor if the vaginal discharge changes to a yellow-green color or if fever greater than 100.4 F and chills develop.
Do not have intercourse, use tampons or douche for one month.
A small amount of spotting may occur following laser treatment. This should stop within a few hours. If heavy bleeding or clotting occurs call your nurse or doctor. Some women experience pelvic cramping pain following laser treatment, which may last about an hour. Therefore, it is recommended that you plan for a few hours of rest.
If cramping pain persists or if the pain becomes severe, please call the Pap Smear Evaluation Center or the Gynecology resident on call. The phone numbers are below.
Follow-up care
Your next visit will be in four months for a repeat Pap smear in the Pap Smear Evaluation Center. This is important because it will help assess the success of the laser treatment. Close follow-up will be recommended for one year following laser treatment.

¿Que es laser?
Ha sido determinada que el Laser se usa para tartar las células anormales en la cervix. El laser es una luz de alta energia que destruye las células que son anormales en el area de su cervix o vagina.
INSTRUCCIONES PARA EL TRATAMIENTO ANTES DEL LASER
Es importante que usted no tenga el tratamiento de Laser durante su menstruación o poco reciente haber pasado. Si usted esta embarazada o sospecha estarlo no debe tener este tratamiento. Llame al Centro de Evaluación de Papánicolau concerniente a ésto.
QUÉ PUEDE ESPERAR DURANTE EL TRATAMIENTO DEL LASER
El procedimiento toma aproximadamente de 20-30 minutos. Se hace en la Sala de Operacion. Es similar al examen de colposcopía.
Usted puede esperar algún obstaculizar (semejante a calambres menstruales) siguiente la cirugía.
INSTRUCCIONES A SEGUIR DESPUÉS DEL LASER
La mayoría de las mujeres tienen una descarga vaginal que puede durar de 2-3 semanas mientras el cervix o (matrix ) se sana. Llame a la enfermera or doctor en llamada si el flujo vaginal cambia de un color amarillento a verdoso o si tiene fiebre mas de 100.4F y escalo frios.
No tener relaciones sexuales, tampons o duchas por un mes.
Una pequena cantidad de sangramiento puede ocurrir con este tratamiento y parara en unas cuantas horas. Pero si el sangramiento es pesado o fuerte por favor llame a la enfermera o al medico en llamada.
Algunas mujeres pueden tener calambres o dolor en el area de la pelvis despues del tratamiento que puede durar como 1 hora. Es por eso que se recomienda que hagan arreglos para unas cuantas horas de descanso. Si el dolor persiste y es severo por favor llame al Centro de Evaluacion de Papanicolau or al medico en llamada.
CUIDADO DE SEGUIMIENTO
Su próxima visita será en 4 meses para repetir su papanicolau. Esto es importante porque ayuda a obtener el exito de el tratamiento de laser. Se recomienda setguimiento por un ano.
