The Vascular Disease Center's Major Components
Vascular Medicine
Specialists in the Vascular Medicine and Atherosclerosis Unit are available to evaluate and manage patients with arterial disease and venous disease and to contribute on a continuing basis to treatment of coexistent cardiac disease, hypertension, diabetes, lipid and thrombotic disorders. The entire range of resources provided by the Cardiovascular Medicine Division is readily available to Vascular Center Patients. In selected cases, noninvasive cardiac evaluation may require exercise testing, thallium and sestamibi imaging, echocardiography, ambulatory Holter monitoring and, if indicated, cardiac catheterization.
Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory
The Diagnostic Laboratory provides noninvasive studies for in-depth evaluation of central and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and venous disorders; these include high resolution ultrasound with Doppler interrogation, plethysmographic recordings and the adjunctive application of exercise testing, when appropriate.
Vascular Disease Prevention Program
The Vascular Disease Prevention program identifies and treats patients who have vascular disorders that contribute to atherosclerosis. Physicians, counselors, and nutritionists are available to manage patients with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes, and to facilitate smoking cessation and exercise programs.
Vascular Surgical Service
The Vascular Surgical Service performs more than 1,250 procedures annually, including carotid endarterectomy, resection and repair of aortic aneurysms, renal artery reconstruction and a variety of techniques for lower limb revascularization.
The hallmark of the BWH Vascular Center is its multidisciplinary approach to evaluating and treating patients with acute or chronic arterial, venous and vasospastic disorders. Services in vascular medicine, vascular surgery and radiology are provided within the context of a carefully integrated program of risk-factor modification.
