Percutaneous Ventricular Assist Devices (PVAD) Occasionally, a severely weakened heart may require support to pump enough blood to the rest of the body. Several temporary devices placed through small tubes (catheters) from the groin are available to help provide temporary blood flow support for patients who have had very large heart attacks, or who are undergoing complex procedures in the catheterization laboratory in which they require additional support to make the procedure as safe as possible. Permanent devices to support the pumping function of the heart can be inserted with surgery, if the patient continues to need support after a few days of using the PVAD devices.
