A Distinguished History
The first successful kidney transplant in the world was performed between identical twins at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in December, 1954. For this work, Dr. Joseph Murray was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Expertise in Transplantation
Since then, over 2500 kidney transplants have been performed at Brigham and Women's Hospital, including the first successful transplant between relatives who were not identical twins, and the first successful deceased donor transplant. Brigham and Women's Hospital has been involved with numerous firsts in transplantation.
