Clinical and laboratory research is a journey into the unknown, driven by curiosity. The hope is that by seeking the answers to questions we will be able to solve medical mysteries.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital researchers are asking: How can tiny particles annihilate tumor-growing cells with stealth and precision? What role do stem cells play in recovering from a spinal cord injury? And, what can hospitals do to improve patient safety?
We have a rich history of shaping the national and international discussion of disease and leading the way on new discoveries. Our large epidemiological studies, such as the Nurses’ Health Study and Physicians’ Health Study, definitively changed medicine.
The Biomedical Research Institute, an umbrella organization within the hospital, facilitates collaboration among researchers. Brigham and Women’s Hospital has more than 3,200 researchers, including nearly 1,000 research fellows. During fiscal year 2008, we received $441 million in research support.
