One of the newest buildings at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center. When the Shapiro Center opened in the summer of 2008 it was greeted with enthusiasm. The center features 16 operating rooms outfitted with advanced imaging technology and five floors of patient rooms that offer privacy and space for healing.
The center was created with the health of the community in mind. Environmentally friendly features such as large windows allow for more natural light to reduce energy needs and a white roof deflects heat. Construction contractors recycled more than 90 percent of their construction waste and used recycled materials whenever possible.
Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro gave a generous gift to help build the center. “This hospital may make a difference between people living and dying,” Carl J. Shapiro says, “If we can help people to live longer and better, then I think we’ve accomplished what we set out to do.”
