Breakthrough technologies are innovations that lead us in new directions. Brigham and Women’s Hospital strives to support breakthrough technologies because we recognize that in order to best serve our patients we need to continue to improve the way we deliver care.
In 2006, Ferenc Jolesz, MD, vice chairman of BWH’s Division of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, conceived a way to expand the capabilities of intraoperative MRI technology, which allows surgeons to capture images during surgery. He wanted to make it possible to perform imaging and surgery in the same location, which could save patients from undergoing multiple operations and reduce costs.
The project, the Advanced Multimodality Image-Guided Operating Room, is a three-room operating suite that includes a traditional operating room and incorporates technology, including X-ray, angiography, and ultrasound, and adjoining rooms that house MRI and PET/CT scanners.
The operating table can slide safely between rooms. Now, with better access to accurate images, surgeons can make the best decisions at the most critical time.
