The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), in collaboration with Harvard-affiliated hospitals in the Longwood Medical Area (Beth Israel/Deaconess Medical Center [BIDMC], Children's Hospital [CH)]and the Joslin Diabetes Center [JDC]) and the VA Boston Healthcare System [VABHS] offers a research and clinical training program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension. The goal of this program is to provide superior clinical and research training to individuals with the M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees who plan a career in academic endocrinology. We also offer post-doctoral training for individuals with the Ph.D. degree in the laboratories of the Endocrinology and Hypertension Training Grants. Faculty members involved in basic research in Endocrinology or Hypertension and other investigators are located at the BWH, the Longwood campus at Harvard Medical School [HMS] or the Dana Farber Cancer Institute [DFCI].
Program for individuals with an M.D. or M.D., Ph.D
The program involves a -3-4 year training sequence. The first year consists of intensive inpatient and outpatient clinical training. The second through third or fourth years are largely committed to full-time laboratory and/or patient-oriented research training. Clinical activities are minimized, with trainees typically attending a half-day longitudinal outpatient endocrine clinic and occasionally a one-month inpatient consult experience in the second year. Clinical activities are conducted primarily at the BWH and BIDMC but also at the CH and VA Boston Healthcare System.with some outpatient experiences gained at Joslin Diabetes Center, Children’s Hospital and VA Boston Healthcare System. The fellows attend attend Division research and teaching conferences as well as those in the Harvard Medical Area, which complement their research and clinical interests.
In the course of the trainee’s clinical experience, he/she performs a variety of procedures and evaluates patients with the following problems: thyroid disorders (including 131I radioiodine therapy and fine needle aspiration of thyroid nodules); children with delayed puberty or short stature; hirsutism and virilization; hypertension (including pheochromocytoma, primary aldosteronism and renal artery stenosis); sexual dysfunction and infertility including polycystic ovarian disease; pregnancy-related endocrine diseases; diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, metabolic syndrome, pituitary dysfunction; lipid disorders; osteoporosis, adrenal disorders, metabolic bone disorders, and hypo- or hypercalcemia.

Individuals interested in applying for the Fellowship Training Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension can download the application from the link below. We accept applications from October 1 though January 31 for applicants requesting a start date of July 1 of the following year (i.e. 21-17 months prior to enrolling in the program). We will also accept applications via ERAS.
Please note that since support beyond year 1 is typically funded through NIH-sponsored mechanisms, fellowship positions are only available for U.S. citizens or individuals with permanent U.S. residency status. There are no funds available for applicants with J-1, J-2 and H-1 visas. Thus, we regret that we cannot accept applications from individuals who do not have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
