Some Coping Tips
Sun-Protective Clothes
The dad of an EPP kid wrote telling us that the Under Armour athletic wear company makes a line of “Turf Gear” shirts which look cool and have an SPF of 80, and were effective in protecting him from sun exposure (the kid had thought that the Solumbra line looked rather “uncool”). Their web address is www.underarmour.com.
Other sports apparel companies are also getting into the act of producing sun-protective clothes — you might want to check out the catalogues of Patagonia and Columbia Sportswear.and Lands’ End. But none of these are certified as being effective - you have to take a chance and test them for yourself.
Another general clothing company which is making sun-protective clothing is Sun Solutions — their website is http://sunsolutionsclothing.com. Again, no guarantees — you’ll have to try an item to see if it works for you.
New Sunblock
Total Block C.O.T.Z. — this contains only titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as active ingredients, and does not have any of the organic sunscreens and fragrances which people can get allergic to. Also, the zinc and titanium sunscreens are the ones which are the most effective for EPP people, so this particular sunscreen may work well for you. Again, each person will have to try it and see if it works for you.
Pen-Pal Request
A Mom with a 9-year-old boy with EPP would like to correspond with other moms with similar-aged kids. Her address is cscolgrove@aol.com.
That’s the news — don’t hesitate to send us coping tips, and pen-pal requests AND change of address notices if you want to keep on getting EPPREF NEWS. Contact us at mmmathroth@rics.bwh.harvard.edu or call (617) 525-8249. Happy winter!!
