Our History
The Center for Bioethics is rooted in a longstanding commitment to clinical bioethics at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The Hospital Ethics Committee first convened almost 25 years ago and was one of the first hospital ethics committees in the United States. In 1996 the hospital staffed its first dedicated clinical ethics service, providing ethics consultation services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week upon request by any hospital clinician, patient or patient family member. In 2005 Dr. Lisa Lehmann was appointed the first Director of the newly created Center for Bioethics. The Center draws from the hospital’s clinical ethics programs with further emphasis on interdisciplinary research and education.
