How you see yourself and how you believe others see you. |
Let's face it - there aren't many women who are happy with their bodies. No wonder, with the images we see day in and day out. Models are worshipped as superstars, and many of our most popular female celebrities are stick-thin. Surveys show 56% of females in the USA dislike their appearance. Negative body images can lead to poor self-esteem and avoidance of activities. Taken to an extreme, poor body image can lead to eating disorders.
If you want to change your shape, there are things you can do - weight loss, exercise, surgery. But it's important to take these steps for the right reasons. Looking different won't change your life - you'll still be you. And, thanks to genetics, there may be aspects of your body that you can't change.
Any attempts you make to alter your body should be made with self-love, not self-loathing. Being truly happy with yourself is about changing your head, not your body.

Build a Better Body Image
- Accept your genetic body type.
Your weight, height, and bone structure are strongly determined by your genes. Healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes.
- Be media smart.
We're bombarded with media messages telling us how our bodies are not perfect, so we will buy certain products. Remind yourself that these body images are manufactured by make-up, primping, airbrushing, and cosmetic surgery. Don't let advertising manipulate your feelings about your own self.
- Move your body.
Many studies demonstrate exercise increases our self-esteem, self-image and energy, and makes you feel good about your body. Get moving with some activity you enjoy!
- Listen to your head
Remember to turn those "negative tapes" about your body into positive thoughts: "My body may not be perfect but I have great hair!".
- Reward yourself.
Take time out regularly to relax and do things for your body: go for a walk, get a massage, take a bubble bath, dance to your favorite tunes, try yoga or tai chi, etc.
- Start learning to love your body today.
List all the things you're putting on hold until you are a "perfect" weight. Life is short, start living now by doing these things as you are. Eat a healthy diet, be more active and over time you will achieve a good weight.
