The Center for Faculty Development and Diversity offers strategies and programmatic initiatives to develop requisite skills and enhance the leadership capacity of BWH faculty and trainees.  Leadership development opportunities are offered at the hospital, in the medical school community and on national levels.

Programs for BWH Faculty and Trainees

  • Brigham Leadership Program (BLP): A collaborative initiative between BW/F and Harvard Business School, the Brigham Leadership Program (BLP) was developed to enhance the leadership capacity of mid-career physicians and scientists and nursing and clinical directors.  Organized to accommodate professional schedules, participants meet for four 2.5 day modules on site at HBS.  The program is tailored to BW/F with action-learning projects and custom cases for and about the BW/F environment.
  • Research Leadership Program (RLP): The Office for Research Careers (ORC) offers the Research Leadership Program (RLP), a bi-annual course designed to support junior faculty members transition to a Principal Investigator role and  to prepare them for the challenges of establishing their basic, translational, or clinical research programs at the BWH.   Over three modules, a cohort of faculty meet with experienced BWH scientific and clinical leaders who provide insight and mentorship.
  • Faculty Mentoring Leadership Program (FMLP): The Faculty Mentoring Leadership Program (FMLP) is geared towards faculty who are currently mentoring other faculty and are eager to participate in facilitated peer mentoring seminars designed to develop and enhance mentoring effectiveness.
  • Women's Leadership Program: New in 2012, the Women's Leadership Program is geared towards women faculty who would like to engage in a structured learning experience to enhance their personal and professional growth.
  • Clinical Process Improvement Leadership Program (CPIP): Partners Healthcare organizes the Clinical Process Improvement Leadership Program (CPIP). The aim of the course is to facilitate the development of skills and competencies needed by clinical leaders and front-line health professionals across Partners to actively lead and participate in the clinical process improvement efforts required to meet this challenge.  Participants apply and attend the program in interdisciplinary teams, which are charged with addressing a clinical problem in their environment.  For more information on this course, please contact Orinta Kalibatas at okalibatas@partners.org or 781-433-3638.

Programs for HMS Faculty

  • The Center collaborates with the HMS Office of Faculty Affairs to sponsor an annual 2.5 day leadership program for physicians and scientists in the early stage of leadership.  This intensive program is offered each spring and is designed for HMS instructors, assistant professors, or associate professors who currently have responsibility for a research grant, laboratory, educational course, or clinical unit.  Participants will acquire skills in institutional organization, health care economics (with a heavy concentration on finance), legal and regulatory issues, and the full spectrum of communication skills.

  • Leadership and Faculty Development Conference: The Office for Diversity and Community Partnerships offers an annual Leadership and Faculty Development Conference that provides HMS junior faculty, clinical and research fellows, and other health professionals with information and skills needed for professional and career advancement in academic medicine, and specifically advancement within the HMS community.

  • Leadership Strategies for Researchers (LSR): Harvard Catalyst runs Leadership Strategies for Researchers (LSR), a three-day course focused on helping emerging investigators learn core leadership skills. LSR is designed to prepare clinical and translational investigators to confront the challenges of developing their research programs and teams. This tuition-free course is open to MDs and PhDs with the faculty rank of instructor or assistant professor, and who are currently engaged in clinical or translational research activities. Preference is given to grant-funded researchers, or to researchers who have support from his/her division chief or department chair.

Programs for Academic Medical Faculty through the AAMC

  • The AAMC Leadership Development initiatives support faculty vitality through programs and resources that build capacity for both individual and organizational vitality through a framework of comprehensive professional development that addresses responsibilities of academic service, capability to adapt to challenges, and building communities of learning and practice.
