Our Integrative Medicine Consultations provide advice to patients on the management of one or more medical problems using complementary, integrative or functional medicine. Once we determine the patient’s current problem, past medical history, therapies tried or considered, and treatment preferences, we can assess which forms of therapy the patient might explore or avoid.
Example consults include:
- Rational Use of Dietary Herbs and Supplements: Based on the patient’s medical history, medications, family history, dietary preferences and current scientific evidence, we provide advice on sensible use of dietary supplements.
- Comprehensive Approach to Cholesterol Management and Cardiac Risk Reduction: This is for patients seeking an overall assessment of their risks for the development of coronary heart disease – and ways to reduce them using lifestyle changes, dietary modifications, exercise, stress management as well as medicinal and non-medicinal interventions. We will explore the rational use of dietary supplements in the management of elevated cholesterol based on the patient’s medical history.
- Integrative Medicine Consultation with a Fellow from the Harvard Medical School Osher Research Center: We provide a two-part evaluation by an Osher Clinic practitioner in conjunction with one of the fellows from our associated Division for Research and Education in Complementary and Integrative Medical Therapies, who will research the scientific literature on one or more questions raised and present the results at the second visit.
- Consultation for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: We provide patients with counseling on techniques for managing stress or distress in their lives via individual instruction or by joining an eight-week course offered by the Center.
