Prenatal care
The midwives see patients regularly throughout their pregnancies, and provide physical exams, appropriate tests and cultures, and provide teaching and support. Nearly all women tend to see the same midwife for most of the pregnancy.
Midwifery care during labor
Midwives look after mother and baby's health, and provide emotional support as well during labor. The midwives spend as much time as possible with the laboring woman, managing the labor as well as 'catching' the baby. The midwives respect each woman's wishes and plans for labor and delivery, within the realm of safety. In case of complications, the midwives consult and collaborate with the Harvard Medical School attending physicians and chief residents.
Postpartum care
The midwives check on women's physical health, review their birth stories, assist with breastfeeding, provide emotional support, and initiate discussions about future contraception, if desired.
