The Brain Tumor Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute provides a multidisciplinary brain tumor clinic, individual clinics in radiation therapy, chemotherapy and neurosurgery, a tumor board and radiosurgery evaluation and is a closely coordinated effort between Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
The multidisciplinary brain tumor clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and management of all tumors of the nervous system. Special interests are low grade gliomas, astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, anaplastic astrocytomas, glioblastomas, meningiomas, pineal gland tumors, acoustic neuromas, pituitary tumors, brain cysts, and delayed effects of tumor treatment. Areas of particular emphasis are: image guided surgery, craniotomy with brain mapping and skull base surgery. The intraoperative MRI is particularly important as an adjuvant to brain tumor surgery.
The group includes Dr. Peter Black of Neurosurgery, Dr. Patrick Wen of Neurology, Dr. Naren Ramakrishna of Radiation Oncology, and Dr. Elizabeth Maher of Medical Oncology. The associated clinical staff responsible for the management of patients are Nancy Olsen-Bailey, R.N. and Donna Dello-Iacono, R.N.
For neurosurgery, this clinic is part of the Neurosurgical Brain Tumor initiative which includes Dr. Peter Black, Dr. Alexandra Golby, Dr. Lorenzo Bello, our Tumor Fellow, andour Physician's Assistants.
The Brain Tumor Group carries out several kinds of evaluation. First, there is a Brain Tumor Board every Friday at 11:30 A.M. in which cases that require multi-disciplinary input are reviewed. Second, there is a multi-disciplinary Brain Tumor Clinic from 1:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. every Friday. Third, the Service provides teleradiology and telemedicine service. Last there is a consultation service for evaluating problematic cases. The Brain Tumor Group at Brigham and Women's Hospital provides up-to-date care for all patients with tumors of the central nervous system.
