Trial Chairman: Paul M Ridker, MD

The JUPITER trial aims to answer a critical clinical question: Can statin drugs prevent cardiovascular disease among healthy people with normal low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels but an increased level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP)?

hsCRP is a marker of chronic low-level inflammation, a new risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events. Unlike those with elevated LDL cholesterol, people with elevated hsCRP levels are generally not aware that they have this condition, and they therefore may not take steps to lower their cardiovascular risk. The JUPITER medical research trial will follow approximately 15,000 volunteers at hundreds of clinics across the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to receive either rosuvastatin or placebo for at least 3 years.

Who is eligible to participate?

Men aged 50 years and older and women aged 60 years and older, who have no history of heart attack, stroke, or other serious cardiovascular event, and who, upon examination, are found to have LDL cholesterol levels less than 130 mg/dL (3.36 mmol/L) and hsCRP levels of 2 mg/L or greater, are eligible to participate provided that they:

  • Are not currently using a statin or other lipid-lowering medication
  • Are not currently using oral postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy
  • Are not currently using immunosuppressant medication
  • Do not have diabetes mellitus
  • Do not have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Do not have a recent history of cancer, except skin cancer

Why participate?

As a participant in the JUPITER trial, you will help identify a therapy for the millions of people worldwide who may be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease because of an elevated hsCRP level. Not only will this new knowledge benefit others, but it may also ultimately help you avoid a future heart attack or stroke.

What would my participation entail?

After initial screening visits to determine your eligibility to participate, you will be required to make 2 brief clinic visits per year, for at least 3 years.  You will also be required to take 1 study pill per day for at least 3 years.
