| The Division is now conducting the Physicians' Health Study II, which is evaluating in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial the effects of beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, and multivitamin supplementation on the prevention of cancer (especially prostate cancer), cardiovascular disease, cataract, and age-related macular degeneration. The participants in this study are 15,000 U.S. male physicians, some of whom took part in the original Physicians' Health Study. A substudy is also being conducted among the original Physicians' Health Study cohort to examine the relationship between regular use of aspirin, acetaminophen, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for analgesic purposes and risks of renal disease, bleeding complications, and cardiovascular disease. |
