as Physician-in-Chief and Chair of Medicine

Physician-in-Chief rejoining BWH
BOSTON – Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) today proudly announced Joseph Loscalzo, MD, PhD will be joining the hospital as Physician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Medicine. For more than 12 years, Loscalzo has served in several roles at Boston University and Boston Medical Center. He first served as Chief of Cardiology and Director of the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute, and, beginning in 1997, as Wade Professor and Chair of Medicine. Loscalzo has continued to serve as Director of the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute during his tenure as Chair of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief. He will officially begin his duties at BWH on July 1, 2005.
Loscalzo received his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency at BWH. From 1978 to 1984, Loscalzo served clinical positions at BWH including Resident Physician, Chief Resident and as a Clinical Fellow in Cardiology. In 1984, after completing his training, Loscalzo joined the Harvard faculty and staff at BWH. He ultimately rose to the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine, Chief of Cardiology at the West Roxbury Veterans Administration Medical Center and Director of the Center for Research in Thrombolysis at BWH. He joined the faculty of Boston University in 1994, first as Chief of Cardiology and, in 1997, Chair of Medicine.

Loscalzo is widely recognized as an outstanding scientist, clinician and teacher. He has received numerous awards including the Clinician-Scientist Award and the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American Heart Association, the George W. Thorn Award for Excellence in Teaching at BWH, Educator of the Year Award in Clinical Medicine at Boston University, the Glaxo Cardiovascular Research Award and election to the prestigious American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians.
During the past 20 years, Dr. Loscalzo has been the recipient of numerous grants from the NIH and industry for his work in the areas of vascular biology, thrombosis and atherosclerosis. Currently, he is principal investigator of four active NIH grants including a Specialized Center of Research (SCOR) Grant in Ischemic Heart Disease. He served for nine years as Associate Editor of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine and currently holds the title of Editor-in-Chief of Circulation.
