What to Expect
-
Expect to be at Brigham and Women's Hospital for approximately 2 1/2 hours.
-
If you prefer not to change into an examination gown, please wear loose fitting clothes without metal above the waist (bra without wires and metal hooks).
-
You may eat and drink without restriction before the screening examination.
-
Check in at Patient Registration located immediately to your left as you enter the hopsital at the 45 Francis Street entrance.
-
Meet with NLST staff who will explain to you in detail the purpose of the trial; and answer any questions you might have. If your questions are answered to your satisfaction and you are eligible to participate, you will be asked to sign an informed consent document and then be randomized (randomly selected by a computer) to one of two study groups.
-
If you received NLST questionnaires please complete them as much as possible prior to arrival as this will considerably decrease the time spent at BWH; if you didn't receive them or didn't have time to complete them, you will have time to fill them out at the NLST Center. The research staff will assist you and make sure that all questions are answered.
-
A spirometry test to measure your lung function will be administered. You will be asked to inhale and exhale all the air from your lungs into a handheld computerized device. If you are on bronchodilators (medication to assist with breathing), your test results will be most useful to the NLST study if you can be off of short acting medication for six hours and long acting medication for 24 hours. Please do this to the extent with which you are comfortable and do bring your medication with you. You will be able to use it immediately after the test.
-
The CT or X-ray test require minimal time and will be explained to you.
-
Upon completion of the screening test you will receive a $40 to compensate for time and travel expenses.
-
The report of your screening test will be sent to you and your primary care physician.
