IRRADIATOR ACCESS
The Brigham and Women's Hospital maintains a Cesium-137 irradiator for biological samples. BWH researchers may obtain escorted or unescorted access privileges to use the irradiator. If you wish to use the irradiator during normal working hours and are able to schedule your need a few days in advance, you may coordinate escorted access through the Office of Health Physics at (617) 732-6057. If your research requires access that cannot be prescheduled or access may be required during off hours such as nights and weekends, you will need to obtain unescorted access.
The process for obtaining unescorted access is described in this flowchart. You initiate the process by completing the application for unescorted access and sending to the Radiation Safety Officer and the Human Resources Official. You will receive information on undergoing a background check, fingerprinting, and training in the use of the irradiator. Once you have successfully completed these steps you will be granted unescorted access privileges to the irradiator.
If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact the Office of Health Physics at (617) 732-6057.
