Division of Musculoskeletal (Bone) Fellowship Program

Since 1992, the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Division of the Brigham & Women’s Radiology Foundation has maintained a clinical fellowship program. Each academic year, the Division appoints six fellows to train with staff radiologists and distinguished faculty to experience the full range of musculoskeletal imaging, and imaged-guided interventions. The MSK fellowship provides a comprehensive exposure to arthrographic procedures and a large volume of cross-sectional imaging studies such as CT and MRI imaging of the extremities and spine, radiography, and image-guided biopsies of bone and soft tissues. Additionally, the fellows have the opportunity to get hands-on training in new, advanced, minimally invasive procedures such as vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, as well as other spine and non-spine interventions. Staff Radiologists are present at all aspiration and interventional procedures, and provide direct supervision at the workstation daily as the examinations are reviewed while the fellows are responsible for consultations and image interpretation. The fellows are highly encouraged to conduct clinical research and academic projects (research, review paper, book chapter, etc.) with a staff advisor. Presentations of research projects are to be reviewed and supervised by one or more staff and faculty members. If the fellow presents research at one academic meeting, travel expenses will be reimbursed. Teaching responsibilities also include case presentations at inter-department conferences with Orthopedics and Rheumatology, “view box” case discussions, journal club, and supervision of the residents when they perform arthrography.
In February 2009, the Brigham and Women’s/MGH Health Care Center was opened adjacent to Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. The Musculoskeletal Radiology section at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is responsible for all sports medicine imaging and interventions at the site. Fellows will be expected to rotate through this facility and perform joint arthrography and image consultation for the busy orthopedic services of both Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospital on site.
