Cancer Imaging Clinical Fellowship Program at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
The Cancer Imaging Fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) provides extensive experience in body imaging including MRI, CT, PET/CT, and US in adult patients with cancer. Subspecialty training with a focus on breast imaging and/or PET/CT is also available.
Equipment and resources:
State-of-the-art equipment includes 64-slice CT, 1.5-T and 3-T MRI, PET/CT, digital radiography, US, digital mammography and gamma camera systems. The DFCI also serves as a core imaging analysis laboratory for imaging studies performed in the context of local, national, and global clinical trials, and is in the process of creating a Center for Biomedical Imaging in Oncology (CBIO) that will oversee all pre-clinical and clinical imaging research performed at the DFCI and in a new 14,000 square feet facility dedicated to pre-clinical imaging.
Rotation Overview:
- Approximately 60% of the fellowship entails body imaging including CT, MRI, and US imaging of the chest, abdomen, pelvis and extremities.
- Approximately 20% of the time is divided between nuclear oncology . Nuclear oncology includes PET/CT and gamma camera imaging.
- A breast imaging rotation may also be available, if requested.
- Approximately 20% of the fellow’s time can be dedicated to research assuming that a detailed research project outline has been presented and approved by an attending radiologist as the project mentor. Research milestone schedules are clearly articulated and research progress is closely monitored.
- Approximately one month of the Oncoradiology Fellowship is designated elective time. Elective time may be spent on approved research projects, or in other subspecialties at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH).
- On-call responsibilities consist of weekend day coverage.
Teaching/Conference Responsibilities:
Participation in various clinical conferences is encouraged. Daily didactic teaching sessions are provided by DFCI Radiology faculty. Continual educational contact is provided five days per week, from 8:00AM until 6:00 PM. The Cancer Imaging Fellow is required to attend and present at the Thoracic Oncology Conference every Tuesday morning and at the Radiology-Oncology Pathology Conference every Friday morning.
Fellowship Supervision and Evaluation:
DFCI Cancer Imaging Fellows will receive continuous on-site training, teaching and feedback. Dr. Fiona Fennessy, Director of the DFCI Cancer Imaging Fellowship Program, and Dr. Annick D. Van den Abbeele, Chief of the Department of Imaging, DFCI, will evaluate the fellow’s performance.
Eligibility:
U.S. applicants must be board-eligible or board-certified in radiology. Foreign applicants must be ECFMG certified and eligible to obtain a clinical visa prior to starting the fellowship. The fellowship at DFCI is structured in accordance with the fellowship regulations as provided by the Department of Radiology at BWH.
