Introduction
The Brigham and Women's Hospital Department of Radiology performs more than 460,000 inpatient and outpatient procedures annually in the hospital's radiology facility and an additional 82,000 procedures are performed at its community radiology locations. Brigham and Women's Hospital is consistently rated as one of the top ten hospitals in America by US News and World Report. Brigham Radiology has embraced the digital era, with hard copy films remaining only in a small subset of mammography studies. Even the Breast Imaging section will soon be completely digital, creating an entirely digital department. The installed base of imaging equipment is substantial and is constantly being upgraded to remain cutting-edge. The Department is fortunate to have signature programs in MR-guided therapy (including a real-time interactive, open MR unit for image guided surgery), and a robust PACS and computer network infrastructure. Detailed information about our radiology specialty programs and clinical services is available in the Patient Services section of this website.
BWH radiologists represent the top of their fields. The Department has 67 Clinical Faculty in its Brigham Division and 9 more in the Community Division. There are 36 residents and 27 fellows participating in the clinical training program. More than 120 technologists, more than 15 nurses, and extremely helpful support staff constitute a vital part of the Department.
In addition to world-class patient care, our department has a strong commitment to research. During the past six years Brigham and Women's Hospital has been one of the two leading independent hospitals nationwide in grants and awards from the National Institutes of Health (the other being our affiliated institution, Massachusetts General Hospital). The research staff includes a large cadre of scientists and technical and support personnel. The Department has over a dozen centers of research excellence, ranging from innovations in image-guided therapy to computer-assisted medical education. Our department conducts basic science research as well as clinical research, and our work has resulted in several patents. Such groundbreaking research achievements translate directly into better patient care.
The third part of our mission is to train future leaders in radiology. We extend our teaching commitment to technology students, medical students, interns, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians and technologists. Our staff physicians and basic scientists hold simultaneous faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School. We participate in teaching programs for Harvard students in preclinical courses as well as through clinical clerkships. The Department also offers a number of annual subspecialty post-graduate courses in association with Harvard Medical School. Our continuing medical education seminars, held in locations from Boston to Hawaii, are taught by leading authorities who cover the diagnostic and therapeutic advances in each subspecialty and new technologies in the field.
