Residency Curriculum
Our four-year residency program consists of a carefully balanced series of rotations through all clinical subspecialties of radiology (see Table below). Each resident previews cases independently at his or her PACS viewing station, and then reviews his or her findings and impressions with a radiology staff member in a personal teaching exchange. Invasive and interventional procedures are carried out by residents under supervision by staff members and/or clinical fellows. As each resident advances through the program, independence and responsibility increase in accordance with individual ability.
In addition to the standard diagnostic radiology residency, there are three specialized training tracks, including:
We accept applications through the ERAS match program. Read answers to frequently asked questions regarding applying to our residency program.

HIGHLIGHTS
-
4 WEEK BLOCKS:
Rotation blocks are in 4 week intervals to provide continuity on a clinical service.
-
FIRST YEAR SELECTIVE:
A rotation has been provided to first year residents to allow additional time in a clinical area if needed or desired and provide time for Quality Improvement project and Evidence Based Radiology projects to occur. These projects may be performed with other members of the residency program and can form the basis for subsequent research.
-
CORE SUBJECTS:
Basic subjects are covered in the first 3 years of the curriculum to prepare the resident for the “Core Examination” in Radiology.
-
SUBSPECIALTY CONCENTRATION:
The 4th year of training allows 7 to 8 months of subspecialty concentration time. The subspecialty concentration period provides time for:
-
FELLOWSHIP CONTINUITY:
Residents are encouraged to combine their subspecialty training with a BWH fellowship in the same area.
-
FLEXIBILITY:
Individual programs can be structured during the 4th year subspecialty concentration time.
-
OTHER DEGREES:
Several subspecialty/fellowship programs are being developed to combine additional degrees (e.g. MPH) with clinical training.
-
HUMANITARIAN OUTREACH:
BWH radiology works with Partners Healthcare Center of Expertise in Global Health and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital to provide opportunities to serve and learn in and outside the United States.

# Includes 16 weeks of nuclear medicine (14 +2) and 12 weeks of Breast imaging.
*Concentration months include introduction to research, research project time, leadership skills, observation in a clinically relevant area, an option for humanitarian outreach in addition to subspecialty radiology training.
**It is encouraged that Radiology residents remain at the BWH for fellowship training in their areas of concentration.
