Inpatient Research
The BWH Center for Clinical Investigation (CCI) in partnership with Harvard Catalyst provides inpatient space for clinical research. The dedicated inpatient unit is located on the ninth floor of the Hospital Tower, with an Intensive Physiologic Monitoring Unit and a Standard Bed Unit (6,000 square feet). Resources are available to support research in all inpatient units, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, located in the Center for Women and Newborns.
In addition to the unit resources, the CCI provides access to the Metabolic Phenotyping Core (Nutrition), Harvard Catalyst Core Laboratory (Analytical Central Laboratory, Specimen Processing, and Phlebotomy), and non-invasive Ultrasound equipment.
The following resources are offered to investigators, free of charge or at a reduced rate:
- 9A – Standard Bed Unit (6 beds)
- The inpatient research unit is available to conduct a wide range of studies. Staff is experienced in many different research procedures.
- Also available for outpatient studies requiring longer hour (12 hours) and/or the need for intense nursing support
- 9B – Intensive Physiologic Monitoring Unit (5 beds)
- Rooms are available with state-of-the-art technology to monitor subjects and to ensure environmental standardization of temperature, light, and outside stimuli.

- Investigational Drug administration
- Biological specimen collection
- Venapunctures
- IV Placement
- Infusions
- Ultrasound
- Equipment and Technician are available to assist with study procedures.

Both inpatient units are staffed by RNs, Technicians, Patient Care Assistants, Ultrasound Technician, and Nutrition Personnel.
